SERVING LAWRENCE COUNTY, THE SHENANGO VALLEY, GREENVILLE / NORTHERN MERCER COUNTY, GROVE CITY, AND NORTHERN TRUMBULL COUNTY

AMOUNT DONATED: $1,830.17

The PHN Charitable Foundation (PHNCF) was founded in 2005 as the sole fundraising arm of the Primary Health Network (PHN) Pennsylvania's largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). PHNCF's mission is: "To build and support programs in the PHN service area that increase access to healthcare services and assist, through scholarships, with the pursuit of medical and allied health careers." PHNCF supports this mission by raising funds to build and sustain programs that are intended to improve the health and quality of life in the communities PHN serves. It's fundraising activities are driven by community support and engagement.

  Programs Supported by Your Donations

Potential donations will benefit PHNCF's community-based efforts, including its Scholarship program and Literacy initiative. PHNCF's Scholarship program awards $30,000 annually to current or college-bound students majoring in health and allied health fields. This includes 12 total scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 each. The scholarship evaluation committee is composed of volunteers from PHN and the community, and PHNCF remains in contact with awardees to gauge impact of the scholarships and support success of the students in their endeavors. PHNCF's other major initiative is based on Literacy, in order to promote reading during formative years and throughout life. This includes investing in "Reach Out and Read", a national non-profit that promotes integrating literacy into pediatric care. At each wellness visit from six months to five years, pediatric patients receive a book to take home (169 books distributed since inception of the program). The other part of this initiative is the "Little Free Library" program, offering an assortment of books to be accessed by the community for free, similar to a formal library. This program is supported by fundraising/donations, and PHNCF aims to have a Little Free Library at each of PHN"s western PA pediatric sites.

Needs that Cannot beMet without Your Help

This past year has presented continuing and significant challenges, particularly for PHNCF's communities, as underserved areas are of focus for the organization and have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. COVID-19 has disrupted the public's perception of health and safety, resulting in decreased donations (due to uncertainty of the future). This uncertainty has transitioned into affecting people's attitudes and behaviors in terms of philanthropic giving. However, giving can be therapeutic and allows people to be part of community solutions. PHNCF's efforts are to maintain communication and invite the community to come together to solve issues at hand.
