LAWRENCE COUNTY YMCA

SERVING LAWRENCE COUNTY

AMOUNT DONATED: $19,058.66

At the Lawrence County YMCA, our mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy body, mind and spirit for all. Our vision is to develop a new generation of changemakers who will create communities in which we all want to live. We want to guide our youth to make wise choices and build their self-esteem so they can become successful adults who are engaged in the community, and help families and seniors live their best lives.

Programs include:

Swim lessons and programs for children and adults age 6 months and higher, including Learn to Swim classes for seven school districts at a low rate, and summer water safety and swimming classes to children aged 6-12 living in six of the Lawrence County Housing Authority housing developments. Lessons are free to the children and include transportation to and from their homes, and free swimsuits for participants.
""Y on the FLY,"" a community outreach program, designed to increase our impact in the community, addressing the need for access to programs, recreation, and resources for children, families and seniors. By coming to them with our Y on the FLY van, we deliver programs and services to those in neighborhoods throughout Lawrence County who are unable to take advantage of our facilities -- A “YMCA without walls” approach to community impact.

The 7th Grade Initiative offers free summer memberships and a milestone-developmental program to all 7th Graders in each of our seven school districts. Exposure to unhealthy behaviors such as drug use and delinquency greatly increases when a child reaches 7th grade, so we developed this program to encourage youth to make healthy choices and avoid these risky behaviors

Needs that Cannot beMet without Your Help

The Y's membership fees are used for our day-to-day operations and programs. Additional funds received through donations are used to provide membership assistance to low-income households and support and develop programming to assist youth in our community, such as the Summer Feeding Program, 7th Grade initiative, and the Y on the FLY program. This year we are focusing on increased community outreach and programs to meet our community's needs; donations raised through PA-OH Gives Week help us to do this while continuing to offer a welcoming place to improve overall wellness and be part of our Y Family!
