The Shenango Valley Urban League TECH Program (Teaching E-Commerce & Computers to the Homeless) is a workforce development program that provides on the job training to individuals who are homeless as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or low income. Participants gain transferrable job skills by working in the Shenango Valley Urban League Empowerment Gift Shop learning facets of product distribution from making apparel, gift sets, snack boxes, balloon displays and customer service. They develop an understanding of product distribution and customer service industries through on the job training and gain understanding of how a product is created and marketed from production to distribution. In addition, they also work on improving soft skills such as problem solving, communication, and time management skills. Participants interact/communicate with retailers and shipping/distribution to understand coordination through an educational enrichment component that encompases; interacting/communicating with retailers, e-commerce, soft skills, technology, creativity, cultural awareness, networking skills, social media marketing, and shipping/distribution coordination.

The Shenango Valley Urban League continues to experience growing demand for its programs and services as Mercer County community needs evolve. Increased participation and rising operational costs have stretched the organization’s resources in the past year. Additional support will help expand staffing, enhance existing program capacity, broaden outreach efforts and introduce new initiatives to address emerging needs. Increased funding will position the Shenango Valley Urban League to sustain the quality and reach of current programs, build on its momentum and respond effectively to the growing needs of Mercer County residents.
